Principales elementos del Referéndum Independentista en la región autónoma del Kurdistán iraquí

A pesar de la enorme oposición de países como Turquía, Irán, entre otros de la región, el 25 de septiembre de 2017 el 92% de la población kurda votó a favor de la separación de Irak en un referéndum independentista no vinculante. Por su parte, el Gobierno central iraquí rechazó la legalidad del referéndum y lanzó una operación para recuperar la ciudad clave de Kirkuk. Finalmente, Massoud Barzani anunció su intención de renunciar como Presidente del Kurdistán iraquí.

Main elements of the independence referendum in Iraq’s Kurdistan region. In spite of enormous opposition from Turkey, Iran and other countries of the region, on September 25th a total of 92% of Kurdish people voted 'yes' to separation from Iraq in the non-binding Kurdish independence referendum. However, the federal government of Iraq rejected the referendum’s legality and launched an operation to retake the key city of Kirkuk. Finally, Massoud Barzani announced his intentions to step down as President of Iraqi Kurdistan.
