Territorial dispute between Guatemala and Belize: origins and prospective of the conflict in the framework of popular plebiscites
On April 15th, a referendum was held in Guatemala, where the citizens agreed to legally claim from Belize, just over 11,000 kilometers of continental and insular territories (equivalent to half the territory of Belize) bringing a contentious case into the jurisdiction of the International Court of Justice (CIJ). Since the signing of the Anglo-Guatemalan agreement in the second half of the nineteenth century, both Guatemala and Belize have transferred this conflict to various areas of confrontation either political, legal and military. The referendum obtained 95.84% for the "Yes" option, while only 4.13% chose "No". This referendum is of vital importance since Belize will also hold a referendum with the same question and in case the result favors the "Yes", the dispute will be taken into the attention of the ICJ. Otherwise, Guatemala may resort unilaterally to the ICJ.
